Poetry in motion

Cambridgeshire schoolchildren have been getting creative by taking part in an exciting competition celebrating Walk to School Week.

The children were asked to encourage others to walk to school by writing special footprint shaped poems on why walking to school is good for the environment.

Many entries were submitted and after much deliberation the judges chose the entry from Florence Entwistle from Mayfield Primary. Florence filled her footprint with a poem and pictures of people walking along a path lined with trees.

The poem has been passed to all participating schools for use during the week, and is reproduced below:

"Walk to school week is the best
It actually beats all the rest
1, it stops your petrol fees
2, it saves the plants and trees
3, it stops pollution too
I think I'll walk to school WON'T YOU?"

Florence's entry won her school a free visit from the Cambridgeshire Schools Recycling Bus.

The recycling bus will be making its special trip to Mayfield School in Cambridge on 24 May 2004. The children will be taking part in walking themed activities including making sandals from recycling materials. They will also be collecting shoes to create a giant footprint; all the shoes collected will then be passed to local charities.

Sal Brinton, School Governor at Mayfield School and local member for the Castle area of Cambridge said ‘The standard of entries was so high that it was difficult for the judges to decide on a winning entry. Florence's poem stood out as it combined walking to school and the environment in a catchy and beautifully illustrated way.'
