BASSINGBOURN RESIDENTS RECYCLE PHONES FOR CASH
Cambridgeshire County Council’s Recycling Bus visited Bassingbourne Community Book Café on Saturday 15th January , to help raise funds for a community facility from a load of old rubbish.
People of all ages came along to the Book Café, bringing old mobile phones, book and Christmas cards for recycling, resale and reuse. Visitors came on board the bus where Kim Warren, Recycling Bus Manager and Liz Williams, Master Composter Volunteer were on hand to give advice on how to recycle and compost more.
An amazing £200 was raised on the day from a book and cake stall, a sack full of Christmas cards were collected for recycling and unwanted mobile phones were saved to be exchanged for cash. All proceeds will be used to buy new books, audio tapes and DVDs. The community book café is run by volunteers
who do a tremendous job of helping to save resources by reusing and sharing library books and resources, as well as coming together as a community for a cuppa and a chat.
Kim Warren, Recycling Bus Manager, said ‘It was a pleasure to visit the Bassingbourne Book Café last weekend. I was amazed by the enthusiasm of volunteers and the impressive fundraising in just two hours. The Recycling Bus proved to be an excellent focal point for activities, and a reminder that even in a district with 52% recycling rates, there is still room to reduce, reuse and recycle more’.
